Letter from Mayor Carleton S. Finkbeiner

Denial of a request for additional archaeological surveys

Donald W. Moyer, Trustee
Fallen Timbers Battlefield
Preservation Commission

Gentlemen:

Thank you for your letter of May 18, 1997, I have read it and have discussed it with a number of members of my administration. After giving your request a great deal of careful thought, I have determined to deny you permission to conduct further archeological surveys on the land that the City of Toledo owns in Monclova Township or in the City of Maumee.

My reason for this action is based upon the fact that we did indeed participate in the previous archaeological dig that was carried out in 1995. It is my opinion that this effort was quite comprehensive and did identify the primary site of the Battle of Fallen Timbers. As a result, I see no need to expand the archeological research area any further.

In closing, I might also point out that members of my staff have done some fairly extensive reading on the Battle. As a result, they feel comfortable in saying that the memorial and interpretive center could be placed on the primary battle site in a location that would be most appropriate.

Yours for a Strong Northwest Ohio!

[Signed]

Carleton S. Finkbeiner, Mayor
