U.S. Senator Mike DeWine (R-OH) is introducing legislation today to designate Fallen Timbers Battlefield, Fort Meigs and Fort Miamis as National Historic Sites.
"This bill allows the federal government to enter into a partnership with local governments and local nonprofits to achieve the goals of preservation and public access," said Senator DeWine.
The legislation, which does not require federal funding, recognizes and preserves the 185-acre Fallen Timbers Battlefield site; formalizes the linkage between the Fallen Timbers Battlefield and Monument to Forts Meigs and Miamis; preserves and interprets United States military history and Native American culture during the period from 1794 and 1813, and it provides technical assistance to the State of Ohio as well as interested community and historical groups in the development and implementation of programming and interpretation of the three sites.
Fallen Timbers is famous for the 1794 battle led by General "Mad" Anthony Wayne between federal troops and a coalition of Indian warriors. General Wayne's victory is responsible for the Treaty of Greenville, which opened up settlement of the Northwest Territory. In 1960, Fallen Timbers was designated as a National Historic Landmark.
Fort Miamis, which was attacked twice without success by British troops, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, while Fort Meigs is recognized as the "zenith of the British advance in the west as well as the maximum effort by Native forces under the Shawnee, Tecumseh, during the War of 1812."
"It's time to grant these truly historic areas the measure of respect and recognition they deserve," said Senator DeWine. "I am committed to making sure this area is preserved for future generations, to make sure it will always be there.
